| Fever in ICU can be due to infective or non-infective causes. Empiric therapy for HAI would depend upon the infectious syndrome, organism prevalent in the unit, local resistance pattern | For empirical antibiotic recommendations – refer to respective sections / tables as per suspected site of infections | Common infectious causes include ventilator- associated pneumonia, catheter-related bloodstream infections, catheter associated urinary tract infections, surgical site infections, and hospital onset bacteremia from any other source. Draw two sets (each set having 1 aerobic and 1 anaerobic bottle) of blood cultures, from two different sites before starting treatment with antimicrobials. De-escalation should be done once the culture reports are available. |
For common etiological agents of Fever in ICU, see Annexure B.18.1
