Resistance pattern:
Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) is universally sensitive to penicillin. Pneumococcal resistance in non meningeal isolates is very low in our country and hence standard doses of amoxicillin generally suffice. Conversely, pneumococcal resistance to co-trimoxazole and macrolides is widespread. Resistance to amoxicillin by production of beta lactamase in Hemophilus influenzae is around 30% and that in Moraxella is 90%.
